Is there anything more fascinating than the myth of gold? In our end-of-year issue, Mark van Huisseling gets to the bottom of this fascination. The yellow metal is an investment, the last reserve and, above all, the fabric of jewelry and watch dreams. Recently, however, more and more buyers have been demanding «ethical gold». Suppliers are trying to deliver it. Visually illustrated by Spanish photo concept artist Javier Jaén.
A completely different topic is chamois hunting. Author Florian Schwab explains that it is not about senseless killing, but about an ecological act (population control) in which the hunter approaches the animals respectfully. Brilliantly illustrated by Marc Aspinall. Check out more articles in the  «WW Magazin», supplement to the «Die Weltwoche», available on 23 November 2023 at the newsstand.

Dust teaches us a lot about ourselves - and our view of the world. «No. 45/2023»: Luxury for the ears. Maria Callas was born 100 years ago. The singer of the century, who fell silent at an early age, still enchants her fans today. Our author explains why her voice is here to stay.

This «WW Magazin» issue is the annual fashion special. The centerpiece and cover story is the Louis Vuitton fashion spread. During his tenure at Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière has explored the surreal and the sci-fi. For the fall/winter «Ready-to-Wear» collection 2023/24 he created a collection that was in touch with the street, softer and more down-to-earth, but no less haute than usual. For the first time, however, we photographed not only women but also men's fashion. We found the perfect location in Berlin. The brutalist architecture of the König Galerie in Berlin, the former St. Agnes Church, is a perfect match for the spirit of the fashion collection. Models Penelope Ternes and Tim Piglowski were elegantly captured by photographer Max Attila Bartsch. Obviously using analog photography. Here are my favourite «NZZ am Sonntag Magazin» covers from the second quarter of the year 2023. «No. 22/2023»: Fish is considered by many to be the «better meat» and its consumption is on the rise. Anchovies, for instance, can be bought cheaply in Europe, but its tedious fishing generates barely enough income to survive for the fishermen of Negombo, Sri Lanka. Impressive photo essay by Jonathan Browning. «No. 26/2023»: No one in Europe and the Orient knew the potato until the modern times. But in the meantime, it is impossible to imagine a menu without it. An homage to the «Apple of the Earth». «No. 28/2023»: More than ever, major cities such as Rome, Paris and Barcelona are flooded with tourists. These are the opening title sequences of the most famous Science fiction films «Star Wars» and «Star Trek». And still, we are fascinated by space and ask ourselves questions like: Is there life out there somewhere? Thanks to new telescopes, we'll probably know more in a few years. «No. 3/2023»: Fun in the nikab - Saudi-Arabia is opening up to the culture of consumerism and wants to attract millions of Western tourists to the country. This special issue of WW Magazine is dedicated to Swiss watchmaking – with the highlights of the hour and a preview of the watch year 2023. The reformer Jean Calvin forbids the wearing of jewelry in the 16th century. With this, the success story of the Swiss watchmaking takes its course. A chronology up to the present day, where boutiques in prime locations in the world's most important cities showcase the creative, aesthetic and precision mechanical mastery of the Swiss watchmakers to the global public. This cover story is beautifully illustrated by Mendoza, Argentina, born visual artist Mauco Sosa. Wildlife poaching threatens rhino populations in Africa and India. Is there a more beautiful season than winter? To celebrate this we have asked Danish artist Mads Berg to illustrate a typical Swiss winter wonderland scenery. For those who find winter too cold, Stefan Wiesner, could be a better fit: the avant-garde chef, prepares bread, sausages and ice cream on open fire; or the self-awareness report by Mark van Huisseling on mediatation - perhaps the simplest form of health care. 150 ZURICH

In October 2022, the Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) celebrates its birthday – for the 150th time. From world wars to natural disasters to pandemics – the insurance company has grown stronger along the way, but stayed nimble.  But most important Zurich still feels like a startup in many ways but is, first and foremost, a beacon of stability. The 186 page coffee-table book «Zurich: Startup since 1872» honors this  achievement. The main stories are photographed by artists all around the world: Lalo de Almeida, Clarissa Bonet, Jordi Ruiz Cirera, Jon Horvath, Joël Hunn and Muir Vidler. Louis Vuitton's chief designer Nicolas Ghesquière played with androgynous tailoring, often in oversized shapes for the fall/winter «Ready-to-Wear» collection 2022/23. If you suddenly see young women sporting old men’s ties this fall, you’ll know why. «Testing. Trying. Playing. Knowing. Yearning. Desiring. Wanting it all. Without restrictions.» was the vibe Ghesquière was after. For our fashion shooting there was no better place to capture this impermanence and beautiful volatility of adolescence than in the streets of Paris. Perfectly realized by photographer Markus Pritzi, stylist Philipp Junker and the ucoming model Flo Fleming. Its skin, bones and organs are black and it likes to sit in one's lap and enjoys cuddles. «No. 22/2022»: Portrait of lawyer and politician Sanija Ameti, co-president of «Operation Libero». Photo essay by Simon Habegger. «No. 11/2022». From the orphanage in the civil war in Sierra Leone to the big ballet stages of the world. An interview with Michaela LePrince about her life - the story of a victory over war and misery. «No. 14/2022». Wendepunkte

Together with the agency «Panda & Pinguin» I developed the magazine «Wendepunkte» for the Department of Justice and Home Affairs of the Canton of Zurich. Its title was inspired by the theory of «turning points». These are biographical turning points in the lives of male and female offenders - such as marriage, the birth of a child, a move to the country - that lead to a departure from delinquency and reintegration into society. Reintegration is the goal of the correctional system. But how does it work? The answers to this question do not consist of simple recipes. The journalistic approach of «Wendepunkte» discusses these taking into account the diversity of topics, solutions and controversies.

Photos by Jiří Makovec. «No. 43/2021»: What moves the youth of today? We asked a Zurich high school class - and 13 students wrote short essays about the big issues of the day. The charming illustrations were made by David Biskup. The cover has made it as well to Coverjunkie Short List 2021.  «No. 48/2021»: Bye-bye, Berlin. In the last thirty years no other European metropolis has been able to electrify the global lifestyle elite in such a way. But can the myth of Berlin survive the pandemic and even more so the gentrification - or will it fade away? Is the moment of the German capital as a place of longing history? A status update. The cover topic of this «WW Magazine» issue is champagne. Also called the drink of the gods. No other wine creates the same magic. That is why it was the favourite drink of the Sun King, Louis XIV, who apparently went to bed with champagne and woke up with it. However, it seems that a monk, Dom Péerignon, a tall, fat man who was in charge of wine production at Hautevillers Abbey, perfected the «méthode champenoise» and was the first to bottle and cork 0.75 litre bottles. He thought that was the amount a male adult would drink at dinner. The cover was illustrated by artist Javier Jaén. The illustrations for the inside were drawn by Aart-Jan Venema. QUAI ZURICH CAMPUS

In September 2021, Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) has reopened its Quai Zurich Campus, which blends eco-friendly architecture and a stunning prism façade with the original building dating back to 1900. It’s a handsome statement about the importance of physical spaces in this age of video calls. One of the world’s most sustainable global HQs is more than just a place to work: it’s a home for the company’s community and a part of the cultural fabric of the city, putting Zurich’s stamp on the world. The 100-page coffee-table book «Quai Zurich Campus: In Good Company» was created to celebrate this occasion. In six chapters, important events and personalities that stand for the city and the insurance company are presented. FRAME #25

The 25th edition of «Frame» is dedicated to the Zurich Film Festival. In the Covid year 2020, it was probably the only film festival that did not only take place virtually. Countless stars and starlets came to the city on the river Limmat - including Olivia Colman, Til Schweiger, Maïwenn, Iris Berben and Johnny Depp. French actress Juliette Binoche received the Golden Icon Award for her career. She said about her visit: «I was impressed by the dynamics of the festival». For the first time, the festival was hosted by the new director Christian Jungen. Unfortunately, however, the film magazine «Frame» takes its leave with this edition.

A dream came true, when I was asked by Swiss-German director Susanne Meures to design the filmposter for her second full length documentary «Saudi Runaway». The movie had its premiere in the World Documentary Competition section at the «Sundance Film Festival» in January 2020. Meures also wrote the pic and produced it with Christian Frei. Prior to the European screening at the Berlin Film Festival in February, National Geographic Documentary Films has bought the documentary, which follows Muna, a young woman in Saudi Arabia, attempting to flee the country before her arranged marriage. The movie will hit theatres later on this year.

The last «Frame» issue #24 is available as supplement to the «NZZ am Sonntag», at the newsstands and selected movie theaters on December 8 2019. Beloved «Star Wars» characters such as «Baby» Yoda will live on in the new Disney+ Series «The Mandalorian» - «Frame» on the other hand will be published henceforth as newsletter. «May the Force be with you, always».

Even the animal kingdom comes up with incredible examples. Bats, for instance, have a strong sense for social issues and are able to maintain complex relationships over the years. «Remain in Light» is the fourth studio album of the New York rock band Talking Heads. It was released on 8 October 1980 and is considered the most important and best album of the band. At the same time it is the title for our fashion editorial, where light also plays a key role. Photographer Edgar Berg used the soft, reddish-pink light of the «Magic Hour» the period shortly after sunrise and the «Blue Hour» the period before sunset, when contrast is typically low and the lighting casts a cool pastel undertone. The landscape in and outside of Brighton at the Seven Sisters cliffs and the coastguard cottages, was the perfect location to photograph model Esme Ham and the Louis Vuitton collection. Unforgotten portrayed in films by Jack Nicholson in «Batman» (1989), Heath Ledger in «The Dark Knight» (2008) and Joacquin Phoenix in «Joker» (2019).  On the cover, the complete opposite: do-gooder Sven Schelker fights as Bruno Manser in «Paradise War – The Story of Bruno Manser» for the rainforest. The «WW Magazin» personality of this art issue is Hans Ulrich Obrist. The art curator and critic first gained art world attention in 1991, when – as a student in Politics and Economics in St. Gallen – he mounted an exhibition in the kitchen of his apartment entitled «The Kitchen Show». Among others it featured work by Peter Fischli & David Weiss. Obrist is an advocate and archivist for artists, and has said «I really do think artists are the most important people on the planet, and if what I do is a utility and helps them, then that makes me happy.» More facts about «HUO» and intriguing portrait photos by Dan Cermak in the new «WW Magazin», supplement to the «Die Weltwoche», available on 23 May 2019 at the newsstand. TRACES OF RITUALS

Armin Dietrich's current series and third solo exhibition is called «Traces of Rituals». Its work titles read like «On Friday the 13th dance with the puss in boots under the moon», «When your heart is on fire, take a swing at the chandelier» or «Collect one million cookie-crumbles in a jar & listen to the sound». These small, poetic texts and behavioural scripts – DADA in motion – underline the power of the pictures. Obviously containing references to the legendary book «Grapefruit» by the Japanese-American concept artist Yoko Ono. The vernissage and book launch took place in Berlin during the Gallery Weekend 2019 at the pop-up gallery Knueppel & Compagnon.

This years «WW Magazin»'s fashion cover was created by Berlin-based artist and illustrator Tina Berning. Her work as a fine artist is shown regularly in solo exhibitions in the USA, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Canada. One of her core issues is reflecting the female role in media, which can be seen for example in her book «100 Girls On Cheap Paper». For our transgender themed fashion column she came up with yet another amazing artwork. The magazine also features exciting stories about the importance of sustainable fashion; Suzanna Vock, founder of «Gwand», a Swiss platform for young fashion designers, and the holiday destination Muscat, the capital of Oman. «WW Magazin» is a supplement to the «Weltwoche» newspaper and available at the newsstand on 25 April 2019. Apart from the «Oscars 2019» report, the article about «Marvel – The genious money machine» caught my attention. Especially since I am a huge comic book fan. But I have to admit, that the DC Comics iconic characters Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman were actually my childhood heroes. Nevertheless, I hardly can wait to view Brie Larson in «Captian Marvel» and the fate of the remaining superheroes in «Avengers: Endgame». I am so proud and grateful to have been part of that jury and that I was given the opportunitiy to watch so many stunning Swiss films. «Blue» has been an important colour in art and decoration since ancient times. The semi-precious stone lapis lazuli was used in ancient Egypt for jewellery and ornament and later, in the Renaissance, to make the pigement ultramarine, the most expensive of all pigments. Dark blue became a common colour for military uniforms and later, in the late 20th century, for business suits. This season we spoted «Blue» everywhere: be it in fashion, art, design or architecture – therefore we dedicated our autumn/winter issue to the colour, that was chosen by almost half of both men and women as their favourite colour. The bilingual «COTE» magazine Zurich Edition #23 is available at the newsstand and selected stores, hotels & restaurants in winter 2018/19. Probably everyone knows the saying «French and Parisians – in particular – are snobby». But when I was looking for a location for the «WW Magazine» fall fashion shoot, I made quite the contrary experience. I have never met a nicer and more helpful gallerist before. Jean-Philippe, the owner of the «Mercier & Associés» art gallery, let us use every corner of his gallery and to our astonishment his most valuable assets: his art. Pieces from the exhibition «Ceux qui naissent de la terre» by Claire Barbier, a voluptuous sculpture by Ugo La Pietra and a photographic installation by Luc Lauras. If you happen to be in the 20ème arrondissement in Paris, check out his gallery. And do not forget to take a look at the printed fashion story by Edgar Berg and his talented team. I had the great opportunity to meet the two young actors at our photo shoot, which took place in Berlin, and was blown away by their ease, charm and naturalness.  Similar to Lee Strasberg’s acting technique – the two talents had to express for photographer Joachim Baldauf feelings such as «love», «orgasm» and «grief» in front of the camera just using their face and body. BRING IT OM

Ganesha is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali, Bangladesh and Nepal. Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganesha is known for all these attributes, but his elephant head makes him easy to identify. Therefore I chose him as key visual for the «Bring it Om» yoga studio logo. So, if you are not already a member at a yoga studio, check out www.bringitom.ch and visit one of the classes taught by the wonderful Karin Baltisberger.

GODS AND MONSTERS

When artist Armin Dietrich told me, that his second solo exhibition will be named «Gods and Monsters», I had immediately to think of the highly acclaimed novel by Christopher Bram, which was the basis for the 1998 film starring Sir Ian McKellen, Lynn Redgrave and Brendan Fraser. Telling the story of James Whale, the once-famous director of such classics as «Frankenstein» and «Bride of Frankenstein», who is living in retirement, haunted by his past. While working on this series Armin Dietrich was interested just as well in the fears that haunt our society today. He applied filter foils, coloured pigments and photographs to fibreglass; placing red, blue, green, yellow and pink tones next to mysterious photographic silhouettes. These dark surfaces were produced by taking shadow photographs of so-called restraining straps, which were once used in psychiatric contexts, fitting perfectly fine in the world of the horror movies of the 1930s. The vernissage and book launch took place in Berlin during the Gallery Weekend 2018.

Nowadays it is rare for magazines to illustrate just one article, not to mention a large part of the entire magazine. Quite different at the «WW Magazin», the lifestyle supplement of the political weekly newspaper «Weltwoche», where the art of illustration is valued and celebrated. A great pleasure for me, since I love illustrations over all and I got the opportunity to work with old acquaintances like Tina Berning or Lesja Chernish – and also discovered new artists such as Toby Neilan from London, Haley Tippmann from New York or Rinah Lang from Berlin. In addition to these talented illustrators, the magazine also features exciting stories about the Fiat heir and «downfall prince» Lapo Elkann, actress Zoe Saldana, who breaks at the moment all box-office records as Gamora in «Avengers: Infinity War», and «Mr. Mode Suisse» Yannick Aellen, who sticks up for Swiss fashion. REDESIGN & ART DIRECTION

FRAME #17

Being hired by the NZZ Media Group to redesign the movie magazine «Frame» was a dream come true. The redesign aims to create a more «sophisticated» reading experience, adapting the visual look to the high standard of the literary writing. This was achieved by simplifying the whole layout: using more white space, but less fonts and typesizes. The imagery is slightly more sparing and generous – making the look cleaner. In collaboration with the editorial staff we changed the architecture of the magazine as well. In addition, the amazing Greta Gerwig on the cover brings a breath of fresh air to the magazine. UNCLAD BY ARMIN DIETRICH

On the occasion of Armin Dietrich's first solo exhibition, I was asked to design the art catalogue for his work cycle «Unclad». The artist has created for his series a photographic system using different colour-filter sheets on transparent glass-fibre screens, or large slides, which are superimposed on his subjects. To give the art catalogue a similar feeling and sensuality - I came up with the idea to use some printed acetate sheets recreating the visual and translucent nuances of the art pieces. The glamourous vernissage and book launch took place in Berlin during the Gallery Weekend 2017 in attendence of well-known art critic Mark Gisbourne and Europe's art collectors elite.
